#1 – From SHALE CRESCENT USA – A world-class manufacturing advantage

What happens when abundant energy, major markets and manufacturing infrastructure all come together in one place?

That’s the case being made by Shale Crescent USA for West Virginia and the surrounding region.

Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania together rank as the world’s third-largest natural gas-producing region. The Shale Crescent also sits within a day’s drive of 170 million Americans, putting manufacturers close to both energy supplies and customers.

That combination can mean shorter supply chains, lower transportation costs and reduced time moving raw materials in and finished products out.

For West Virginia, it’s another opportunity to turn abundant resources and a strategic location into manufacturing investment and jobs.

#2 – From MARSHALL UNIVERSITY – Marshall’s IDEA District keeps building momentum

Marshall University is moving forward with its vision for a new center of innovation in Huntington.

The university recently unveiled the next phase of its $300 million IDEA District, short for Impossible Doesn’t Exist Anymore, with new partnerships, facilities and private-sector investment taking shape.

The former Latta’s building will become the IDEA Collaborative, bringing the Huntington Area Development Council, Marshall’s iCenter and other partners together in one location.

Plans also call for a new Med-Tech Building, while construction continues on the Institute for Cyber Security. IBM, Intuit, Alpha Innovations and DroneTrace have committed to maintaining a presence there, creating opportunities for hands-on learning, applied research and workforce development.

Marshall is also working with South Korean company UNDBIO on early plans for an insulin manufacturing facility that could create 1,700 jobs.

The bigger goal is to bring education, research, entrepreneurship and private industry together in one district where ideas can become companies, careers and economic growth.

#3 – From WV SBDC – Reimagining the bridal experience in Charleston

After five years working in the bridal industry, Karley Morris opened Zylvie Bridal in Charleston this February with a goal of creating a more personal and inclusive experience.

The boutique, named for her children Zeke and Sylvia, welcomes brides regardless of size, budget or aesthetic. Morris deliberately avoids many of the restrictions common in bridal shopping, giving customers time and individual attention to find the dress that makes them feel their best.

Before opening, Morris connected with the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, where Business Coach Julia Moran helped her work through projections, budgeting, vendor relationships and marketing.

The approach is working. Customers are now traveling from across West Virginia and neighboring states, with some driving three hours or more based on recommendations and social media.
