#1 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – Get moving and find your people in Charleston
Want to exercise more? Finding some people to do it with might make it a lot more fun. The Charleston Gazette-Mail highlights the growing number of exercise groups and activities around Charleston that combine physical activity with an opportunity to meet people and build community.
The Charleston area offers athletic opportunities for a range of skill and ability levels, including activities at community centers and organized walking and running groups. Pickleball has also become a popular option at the North Charleston Community Center.
Exercise doesn’t always have to mean putting on headphones and heading to the gym alone. Community activities can turn movement into something social, whether you’re trying a new sport or simply finding people who enjoy doing the same things you do.
#2 – From POCAHONTAS COUNTY CVB – Fall traditions take over Pocahontas County
Mountain color is arriving. And in Pocahontas County, that means festival season. The county’s fall calendar is packed with music, food, outdoor adventure and Appalachian traditions stretching well into October.
One of the biggest weekends arrives Sept. 25-26 in Marlinton, starting with the Hammons Family Fiddle and Banjo Contest Square Dance. The West Virginia RoadKill Cook-Off and Autumn Harvest Festival challenges cooks to create dishes using wild game.
Music on Cranberry Mountain and the Cranberry Shindig brings local musicians, old-time square dancing and traditional artisans to the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center.
And the season keeps going with Huntersville Historical Traditions Day, the Greenbrier River Trail Marathon, a Droop Mountain Battlefield reenactment and the Eight Rivers Quilting Party among the October events.

#3 – From WV EXPLORER – An old railroad reveals a hidden West Virginia valley
For generations, the railroad carried resources out of the Meadow River Valley. Now that same route is carrying people in. The Meadow River Rail Trail recently completed its continuous 18-mile route between Rainelle and Nallen, following a former railroad corridor alongside the Meadow River through Greenbrier and Fayette counties.
The gravel-and-aggregate trail follows the relatively gentle grades required by the old railroad, giving bicyclists, hikers and horseback riders access to increasingly wild country downstream from Rainelle. Project coordinator Matt Ford says visitors from outside West Virginia are arriving after trips to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, often looking for a bike ride without the steep climbs found elsewhere in the region.
And there’s more planned. The counties own roughly 24 miles of the former rail corridor, with efforts underway to eventually extend the trail toward the Gauley River.
