1 – From WV EXPLORER – Native brook trout streams gain new protection
West Virginia has expanded protections for more than 170 miles of mountain streams that support native brook trout, the state’s official fish.
The newly designated trout waters are the result of years of collaboration among the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the Department of Environmental Protection, Trout Unlimited, the West Virginia Rivers Coalition, and other conservation partners. Officials say protecting these cold, clean headwater streams benefits far more than anglers—it also safeguards drinking water, supports wildlife, and strengthens outdoor recreation and tourism throughout the Mountain State.
