#1 – From REGISTER-HERALD – Beckley teenager makes racing history with a little help from his friends

For 18-year-old Luke Davis of Beckley, racing has been a lifelong dream. Now, thanks to a group of friends and supporters in the local racing community, that dream has become reality. Davis, who uses a wheelchair, became the first driver to compete in a newly introduced special-needs race at the INEX Legend Car Dirt Championship Nationals in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. His journey began years ago when his grandfather introduced him to racing. Davis eventually became a crew chief for local racer TJ Salango, spending time at the track and learning the sport.

When Beckley businessman Greg Dacal saw Davis’s passion, he decided to help him get behind the wheel. Dacal joined forces with racer and INEX technician Jason Meadows and other supporters to build a customized Legend car. The team adapted the car’s gas and brake pedals to accommodate Davis. What they originally thought might take two years came together in just three months, with Davis helping assemble his own race car. Local businesses also stepped up to sponsor the effort.

Davis has even bigger ambitions. He hopes to become a national racing champion and continue competing for years to come.

#3 – From BUSINESS FACILITIES – Business Facilities highlights West Virginia’s advantages for business growth

Why are companies choosing West Virginia for new investments and business expansions?

That’s the question Business Facilities magazine explores in a recent interview with Christine Davies, Deputy Secretary of the West Virginia Division of Economic Development and Workforce Participation. Davies points to three priorities shaping the state’s economic development strategy: technology, energy and advanced manufacturing. A major focus is helping companies get projects underway faster. West Virginia is investing in industrial site readiness, improving infrastructure and working to streamline permitting for businesses considering new facilities.

The state is working to expand its electricity supply and strengthen reliability as demand grows from manufacturers, data centers and other industries. Programs such as the Governor’s Guaranteed Work Force Program, apprenticeships and community and technical college partnerships help businesses develop the specialized skills they need.

Davies says the state’s economic development approach is centered on creating greater certainty for businesses while supporting long-term investment.
