Trout stocks, haunted tours & arts convening highlight WV this week

October 21, 2025

Today is Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

#1 – Fall Monster Trout Stockings Return

It’s that time of year again — the WVDNR is gearing up to stock more than 40,000 pounds of trout across over 41 lakes and streams during the weeks of October 21 and October 28. Of that total, about 35,000 pounds will be trophy trout (1–2 lbs), and 6,500 pounds will be “monster” trout (3–6 lbs). Here’s a twist: 100 monster trout will carry special tags. If you catch one, you can submit your tag number for entry into a prize drawing — the top prize is a lifetime fishing license. wvdnr.gov

#2 – Tours & Hauntings at Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston is drawing visitors with a mix of historical tours, ghost hunts, and day/night experiences. Built between 1858 and 1881, and once known as Weston State Hospital, the Gothic Revival complex stands out in West Virginia history. Visitors can explore the first floor or take extended tours covering all four floors, staff quarters, morgue, and even an operating room — and after dark, paranormal tours let you chase the supernatural in this storied space.

#3 – Create Your State Convening Kicks Off in Princeton

From October 24–26, Princeton’s Grassroots District will host Create Your State Convening 2025, a three-day gathering of artists, educators, civic leaders, and innovators. The event is more than a conference — it’s a creative lab. Attendees will engage in workshops, public art installations, peer learning, and community-building through culture and storytelling. Leaders in West Virginia’s arts and civic sectors will speak, including contributors from Charleston’s public art office, Beckley’s arts projects, and cultural advocates across the state.
